Tragic crash of Senator Doug Larsen’s plane in Utah
Senator Doug Larsen and his family were involved in a devastating plane crash on Sunday evening shortly after takeoff from Canyonlands Airport, approximately 24 kilometers north of Moab, Utah, reports the Associated Press.
According to a statement from the Grand County Sheriff’s Office, all four occupants of the small aircraft tragically died on impact.
The death of North Dakota Senator Doug Larsen was confirmed on Monday in an email sent by Senate Majority Leader David Hogue to his fellow lawmakers.
“Senator Doug Larsen, his wife Amy, and their two young children died in a plane accident last night in Utah. They were visiting family in Scottsdale and were on their way home. They had stopped to refuel in Utah,” noted David Hogue.
The identity of the pilot remains unclear. “The aircraft crashed under unknown circumstances after takeoff in Moab, Utah,” stated the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
In a Facebook post from December 2020, Doug Larsen announced that his wife had completed her “first flight as a pilot.”
The National Transportation Safety Board has announced that an investigator will be dispatched to the crash site to examine the aircraft, retrieve air traffic communications, radar data, meteorological reports, and attempt to contact any potential witnesses.
The investigator will also request maintenance records, pilot medical documents, and flight history.
Doug Larsen was a Republican elected to the Senate in 2020, representing the state of North Dakota.
