Alexandru Trandafir, when asked if the heatwave can be considered an alarm signal, stated: “Extreme high temperatures are always an alarm signal because, if we look at extreme weather phenomena, they are among those that can cause some of the most significant damages – ranging from vegetation fires(…) to direct problems for people because we know very well that they affect our bodies, especially the bodies of those who already have chronic illnesses or predispositions to such issues.”

Furthermore, when asked about sudden weather changes, he explained: “Practically, if we try to understand the dynamics of the atmosphere, we need to look at jet streams. Jet streams are very powerful winds that blow at very high altitudes and normally separate these masses of air and areas with high pressure from those with low pressure.”

“Well, when these jet streams decrease in intensity, their speed reduces(…) they appear as meanders. When these meanders occur, polar masses descend while tropical masses begin to rise – and then we experience those very abrupt transitions from temperatures of 35-40 degrees to temperatures of 18-19 degrees within a day. During these transitions, we encounter extreme weather phenomena such as storms, gales, tornadoes, and so on,” continued Alexandru Trandafir.
