Simona Halep, a tennis player from Romania, has been handed a 4-year suspension for doping by an independent tribunal, following a request from the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA). The agency has also called for the annulment of all of Halep’s results from March 8, 2022, to October 7, 2022, along with the return of all the prizes she has won during that period, as reported by Digi Sport.
The ITIA stated that Halep engaged in “repetitive and sophisticated” doping in order to enhance her performance at Wimbledon and the US Open. Therefore, they requested a 6-year suspension. Although the judges rejected this request, they highlighted that there were grounds for suspicion.
The Sports Resolutions Tribunal also dismissed the annulment of results and the return of prizes starting from March 8, 2022, and announced that the nullified results would be those obtained after August 29, 2022.
“All the results achieved by the player between August 29, 2022, and October 7, 2022, are nullified, with the relevant repercussions, including the return of prize money, trophies, and the cancellation of points,” stated the decision of the Sports Resolutions Tribunal.
Simona Halep is required to return $80,000, which represents the appearance fee for participating in the singles draw of the 2022 US Open. The Romanian player was eliminated in the first round by Daria Snigur.
Gazeta Sporturilor reports that if the tribunal had granted the ITIA’s request, Halep would have suffered a significant financial blow. During the period requested by the agency for nullifying results and returning prizes, Halep earned $1,914,002 and triumphed at the Rogers Cup held in Toronto.

The ITIA claimed that the doping was both sophisticated and repetitive, stating in the accusation that experts concluded that the Romanian player had used prohibited methods from March to September 2022, had shown obstructive behavior, and the suppression of erythropoiesis suggested that blood doping was done to provide oxygenated blood to Halep during Wimbledon and the US Open. They argued that there was an intention to enhance her athletic performance through prohibited means.
In essence, the ITIA suggested that Halep started doping after she began working with coach Patrick Mouratoglou. However, the Sports Resolutions Tribunal rejected these allegations.
