Ecuador Under Threat: Fraud Accusations and Assassination Plots Haunt President Noboa
Daniel Noboa, a candidate who has long been associated with the elite political class of Ecuador, won the presidential election last Sunday in its second round. However, his rival from the left, Luisa Gonzalez, immediately accused him of orchestrating what she called “the most grotesque electoral fraud”. This accusation has only added fuel to an already volatile situation.
According to a report by military intelligence services that was recently shared on social media, assassins who entered Ecuador from Mexico and other countries planned to carry out “terrorist attacks” against the head of state. The government of Ecuador strongly condemned these alleged intentions in a statement issued last Saturday, stating their firm rejection of any attempt on the life of President Noboa or public officials.
The country is now said to be in a “state of maximum alert”, as per the government’s press release which accused certain political entities that lost the elections of being associated with criminal organizations. However, no further details were provided by the communication.
In response, Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs categorically denied any implication that their country might have been the source of these alleged criminal acts in Ecuador. They reaffirmed that their nation will always be guided by principles non-interventionism.
The relationship between the two countries has been tense since last year when Ecuadorian security forces stormed the Mexican embassy in Quito to arrest a former vice-president who had been granted asylum there.
Meanwhile, Mexico’s left-wing president Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her support for Luisa Gonzalez and stated that she intends to challenge the results of the second round vote, where Noboa won with 55.6% of the votes. The electoral council in Ecuador and international observers have dismissed any claims of fraud.
As a son of a banana magnate, Daniel Noboa represents the political elite in Ecuador that has its roots deeply entrenched in business circles and is known for taking a hard stance on security issues, characterized by deploying soldiers to streets and prisons.
