Rotterdam Port Adopts Controversial Facial Recognition for Truck Drivers, Leaving Many in the Dark by 2025!
The Europe Container Terminals (ECT) is about to make a huge change in port security and efficiency. Come the end of 2025, they’re swapping fingerprint ID systems with an advanced facial recognition technology for truck drivers accessing their terminals. Now, why are they doing this? Well, ECT claims that this new method will improve access flow, cut down waiting times, and enhance safety levels at their terminals, calling it a faster, safer, and more convenient solution compared to biometric fingerprint identification.
The transition process kicks off right away at the Euromax Terminal. By the end of May or beginning of June, the first device will be installed there. Soon after, three other access lanes will follow suit, followed by Delta Terminal where this technology is set to become standard practice.
But what does this mean for drivers? All truck users at the port will need a CargoCard updated with their facial biometric data. Without this new form of verification, entering terminals won’t be possible once the transition completes.
The facial details must be registered at Secure Logistics office in Maasvlakte Plaza, which issues the CargoCards. Until full shift, both fingerprint and facial recognition systems will run side by side, but soon enough, face scanning will become mandatory for all drivers.
ECT is also providing a special section on their website titled “Facial Recognition at ECT”, offering up-to-date information in multiple languages, including FAQs. They stress the need of cooperation from drivers and transport companies to ensure smooth implementation.
The port of Rotterdam, Europe’s largest, continues its digital transformation through adopting more modern biometric standards. Should this initiative prove successful, it could set a precedent for other international marine terminals worldwide. However, truck drivers are now faced with the challenge of adapting and getting ready on time to avoid access issues once the final system is in place.
