Koper Port Becomes Crucial Logistics Hub, Defying Global Challenges With New Milestones!
Koper port, a strategic maritime gate to Central Europe, continues to defy global odds. Despite the tiny 44-kilometer coastline of Slovenia, Koper has emerged as one of the Adriatic’s fastest-growing ports. Rok Žakelj, Rohlig SUUS Logistics’ operational director, emphasized the port’s importance while also pointing out its recent record-breaking performance with over 1.13 million TEU in 2024—a testament to its resilience against challenges like the Red Sea crisis and market uncertainties.
The numbers tell a story of growth and stability: despite a slight downturn in passenger vehicle traffic, Koper’s overall maritime throughput increased by 3%, container volume by 6%, and general cargo by an impressive 8%. This performance is underpinned by its strategic location, continuous investments, and state-of-the-art infrastructure that can handle a wide range of goods.
Rohlig SUUS Logistics has been operating in Slovenia since 2019 with offices in key locations like Koper and Brnik. The company’s flexibility and ability to adapt to the rapidly changing global market conditions have drawn increasing interest from clients, positioning Koper as a vital gateway to Hungary, Austria, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic.
One of the most significant projects on the horizon is the doubling of railway lines between Divača and Koper. This ambitious initiative aims at significantly boosting transport efficiency and capacity; however, unforeseen geological conditions have caused delays and escalated costs. Despite these challenges, Luka Koper d.d., in late 2023, adopted a new strategic plan valid until 2028, focusing on infrastructure growth, smart port concept implementation, human resource management, and sustainable development.
Geopolitical factors have also played a crucial role in shaping the Adriatic ports’ development. The war in Ukraine redirected critical trade routes towards Central and Eastern Europe to the west. Ports like Trieste (Italy), Rijeka (Croatia) alongside Koper (Slovenia) now stand out as vital transshipment hubs for goods originating or destined for these regions, demonstrating their strategic importance in regional logistics.
Despite all odds, including the Red Sea crisis that impacted delivery times from Southern Europe to Northern Europe, Koper port has maintained strong performance and growth, showcasing its resilience and strategic significance in an increasingly complex global market scenario.
