Dust Storm Alert: Saharan Dust Will Blanket Romania Starting This Week
Romania, get ready for a whirlwind of dust and rain this week. According to the National Meteorology Administration (ANM), a mass of air heavily charged with Saharan dust will sweep through southeastern Europe, impacting our country starting Wednesday and lasting till Friday. The forecast from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service predicts that these fine particles could be visible during rainfall in southern Romania on Thursday and Friday, extending to eastern regions by Saturday.
On a side of note, meteorologists have issued a severe warning for heavy rain throughout 11 counties this week. The orange code is already active from Thursday through Saturday due to the expected downpour, while other areas will be under yellow alerts for significant rainfall and strong gusts. For instance, in the Carpathian Mountains and surrounding regions, precipitation might accumulate up to 50-70 liters per square meter, with some local spots reaching over 100 liters.
And it’s not just rain we’re dealing with. At altitudes above two thousand meters, expect a flurry of snow mixed in as well. The yellow alert also covers the southern parts of Banat and Oltenia, stretching into Western Carpathians and isolated eastern areas where rainfall is forecasted to range between 25-40 liters per square meter.
So while the country braces itself for these weather conditions, keep in mind that this warning will remain active until Saturday night. It’s imperative that everyone stays informed and takes necessary precautions to stay safe during this period of dust storms and heavy precipitation.
