USR Deputy Radu Miruță criticized on Thursday the fact that President Klaus Iohannis did not specify what Romania would receive after providing a Patriot missile defense and anti-aircraft system to Ukraine. “As long as the Patriot system has arrived in Romania, it is clear that there was a military and strategic need for it here,” stated Miruță.

The “Donation” of a Patriot System but under what conditions?

Radu Miruță, a USR deputy, reacted after it was announced during Thursday’s CSAT meeting that Romania will “donate” a Patriot system to Ukraine without specifying further details regarding the timeline and the implications of this donation itself.

“The Ministry of National Defense presented to the Supreme Council of National Defense a detailed analysis regarding the operationalization of the four PATRIOT systems, the progress of equipping with the other three systems, their operational importance at a national and allied level, as well as the impact of a potential system transfer,” communicated the Presidential Administration on Thursday.

“They need to tell us when and what we will receive in exchange”

The USR deputy criticized the fact that President Klaus Iohannis did not clearly specify what Romania will receive in exchange for giving up such a highly efficient defense capability. “Considering that this system costs 1 billion euros borne by Romania, with all due respect, they need to tell us when and what we will receive in exchange,” Radu Miruță declared for B1TV.

“Given that these people are very clear about these questions and don’t provide answers to them, my deduction leads me to believe that there is currently nothing in exchange. They could have dispelled these suspicions, saying, folks, don’t worry, it’s a support issue between allies, we had it now, the other one was through a courier, we gain those two days before it reaches us, we give it today and receive the container in over 36 days, in this timeline. As long as this system has arrived in Romania, it is clear that there was a military and strategic need for it here,” added the USR deputy.

“A similar or equivalent system” in exchange

The Presidential Administration stated that the “donation” of the Patriot system (Phased Array Tracking Radar to Intercept on Target), for which Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski has already expressed his thanks to Romania, will be carried out under the conditions of ongoing negotiations with Romania’s allies, especially the USA, for our country to receive “a similar or equivalent system,” meaning a system that can defend on a radius of 150 kilometers, “while also necessitating the identification of a temporary solution to cover the operational vulnerability created by this exchange.”
