According to the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper, Noam Chomsky was hospitalized in the Brazilian city after suffering a stroke in June of last year that affected the right side of his body.
On Tuesday, rumors of Chomsky’s death were abundant on the X network. Jacobin and The New Statesman published obituaries for Chomsky, although the former changed its title from “Remembering Noam Chomsky” to “Let’s Celebrate Noam Chomsky.”
The Brazilian news site Diario do Centro do Mundo retracted the news announcing Chomsky’s death and issued a correction.
Valeria Chomsky is Brazilian, and the couple has owned a residence in this city since 2015.

Considered the founder of modern linguistics, Chomsky argued in his 1957 book “Syntactic Structures” that language is an innate faculty and that “generative grammar,” a set of universal language rules, is inscribed in the human brain.
However, Chomsky has become a central figure in the 20th and 21st centuries, particularly due to his role as an intellectual engaged in his radical critique of US and Israeli foreign policies, as well as mass media.
This opponent of the Vietnam War and the American invasion of Iraq has also befriended left-wing Latin American leaders such as Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez, and the current Brazilian President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
For many years, Noam Chomsky was a member of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and is now a professor emeritus of linguistics at the University of Arizona.
