Lucian Romașcanu, PSD spokesperson, comments on Cătălin Cîrstoiu’s statements

Lucian Romașcanu, the spokesperson for the Social Democratic Party (PSD), addressed the media on Friday evening regarding the statements made by the Coalition’s candidate, Dr. Cătălin Cîrstoiu, during a press conference held in front of the University Hospital in Bucharest.

Cîrstoiu stands firm, media urged to change approach

Romașcanu commented on Dr. Cătălin Cîrstoiu’s statements, stating that the media must “change their approach” towards the doctor’s candidacy for the Mayor of Bucharest.

Romașcanu noted that the doctor “answered all questions” despite “concerted attacks” against him recently. Cătălin Cîrstoiu persevered under pressure and can successfully continue his campaign. The spokesperson for the social democrats emphasized that the medic “is the only one who can decide to stop”.

“As someone who appreciates and has worked in the media for 20 years, I hope the media will change their approach regarding Mr. Cîrstoiu’s candidacy because he has answered all questions. There has been a long period during which attacks were concerted against him. As I have said before, and as he has said, the only person who can decide to stop at this moment is Dr. Cîrstoiu himself. Because he has resisted this pressure, I am confident that he will continue successfully with this candidacy,” stated Romașcanu to B1TV.

Media’s “merit” in disclosures, less so in the case of Nicușor Dan and Piedone

Lucian Romașcanu highlighted the media’s “merit” in presenting potential issues to the public opinion but noted an “imbalance” in that Dr. Cătălin Cîrstoiu was the primary target, while his opponents, such as Bucharest Mayor Nicușor Dan, have “numerous problems and lawsuits”, and Cristian Popescu Piedone has “millions granted without tenders and all family members employed”.

“It is a credit to the media for bringing to light all potential issues. As an observer of the media space, through my position, and as a citizen, if you will, I could not help but notice an imbalance in promoting the ‘sins’ of Mr. Cîrstoiu compared to the other opponents. Mr. Nicușor Dan has numerous problems, lost lawsuits against the city hall, fines paid by the city hall instead of him. Mr. Piedone either gave away 40 million, 15 million, or one million without tenders and with all family members employed. However, all media attention was concentrated on Mr. Cîrstoiu,” stated Romașcanu.

“Can evolve into a good mayor for Bucharest”

Lucian Romașcanu believes that the support of PSD-PNL for Cătălin Cîrstoiu will continue and that he can become a “good” mayor for the people of Bucharest. He emphasized that after this point, accusations against candidates should fall within the competence of the relevant institutions, and ultimately, it will be the voters who decide.

“I believe that Mr. Cîrstoiu has satisfactorily answered some questions. From here on, all the sins of the other candidates should be judged by the appropriate institutions, and the voters should decide accordingly. I believe that the coalition’s support continues for Mr. Cîrstoiu; I cannot know what Mr. Cîrstoiu himself will decide, even though today he stated that he is firmly moving forward. But I believe he is the type of candidate who can evolve into a good mayor for Bucharest,” stated the PSD spokesperson.
