Hamas Lauds “Glorious” October 7 Attack on Israel: “Destroyed Illusions”

The Hamas movement on Sunday praised the “glorious” attack it launched on Israel on October 7, 2023, in a video message released ahead of the one-year anniversary of the assault that ignited the Gaza war, reports AFP.

The “glorious October 7 attack destroyed the illusions that the enemy had created, convincing the world and the region of its superiority and its supposed capabilities,” said Khalil al-Hayya, a member of the Palestinian Islamist movement, in the message delivered from Qatar.

On October 7, Hamas, the Palestinian Islamist movement, unleashed an unprecedented attack on Israel, the largest since the country’s founding in 1948. The attack resulted in 1205 deaths, largely civilians, according to an AFP count based on Israeli figures, including hostages who died or were killed in captivity in Gaza.

In retaliation, Israel vowed to annihilate Hamas in Gaza. This ongoing war has caused over 41,000 deaths, mostly civilians, according to the Hamas government, and has created a major humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian territory.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has always been fueled by heated spirits, but the scale it reached on October 7 fuels divisions and hatred around the world: violent demonstrations, extreme polarization, and an explosion of antisemitic acts, to the point that European and American officials recently evoked at the UN a “tsunami of antisemitism” in the past year.

The one-year anniversary of the October 7 attack has raised significant questions about the future of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the international community’s role in brokering a peaceful resolution. Many are concerned about the potential for further violence and the escalating rhetoric between the two sides.

Despite the ongoing hostilities, there are calls for a ceasefire and a renewed push for negotiations. International leaders are urging both sides to refrain from violence and engage in dialogue to find a lasting solution. However, the deeply rooted mistrust and historical grievances between Israelis and Palestinians make any progress towards peace challenging and uncertain.

The global response to the October 7 attack has highlighted the complexities and sensitivities surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While some nations have condemned Hamas’s actions and expressed solidarity with Israel, others have criticized Israel’s response as disproportionate and condemned the human cost of the conflict.

The situation in Gaza remains dire, with a shortage of food, water, and medical supplies. The ongoing blockade of Gaza, imposed by Israel and its allies, has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis. The international community is under pressure to provide aid and support to the civilian population in Gaza, while also addressing the root causes of the conflict.

The one-year anniversary of the October 7 attack serves as a stark reminder of the urgency for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It also underscores the need for international cooperation to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and prevent further bloodshed.

The world is watching closely as the conflict enters its second year. The coming months will be crucial in determining the trajectory of peace negotiations and the prospects for a lasting solution. The international community must exert its influence to encourage both sides to engage in dialogue and find a way forward that respects the rights and security of all involved.

In the meantime, the lives of millions of Palestinians and Israelis remain on hold. The ongoing conflict casts a shadow over the region and the world, threatening stability and fueling tensions. Only through sustained diplomatic efforts and a genuine commitment to peace can the cycle of violence be broken and a brighter future for all parties be achieved.
