Canicula extremă dried up rivers and wells in over 200 areas in the country
The extreme heat has caused some rivers to “evaporate” or decrease their flow. In the midst of a red heatwave alert, over 200 areas in the country are facing dried up wells, according to ProTV News.
Due to the high temperatures, many wells are drying up, leading to a decrease in soil reserves. Authorities are urging the population to refrain from watering gardens and filling pools with tap water.
The Sohodol River has dried up for several kilometers, and the aquatic fauna is struggling to survive in a few remaining water patches.
Issues are also present on the Danube. The flow of the river is below the multi-year average at the country’s entrance and continues to decrease.
The filling level of the country’s 40 reservoir lakes is currently at 80%, but by the end of the month, it could decrease by three more percentage points.
Restrictions have already been imposed in 290 localities connected to centralized water supply systems.
Almost 900 households in Piscani – Argeș receive water for only three hours a day. Authorities state that this measure was necessary as people were wastefully consuming water. Moreover, thefts have been recorded.
According to Romanian Waters, wells have dried up in 239 localities, with the most severe issues being in Botoșani, Vaslui, and Neamț.
Fortunately, there are no water supply issues for the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant, and no restrictions are imposed.
