Cancel yourself on TikTok! Cancels German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to Dance on the Chinese Social Platform

Chancellor Scholz is following in the footsteps of Joe Biden and other prominent Western leaders who have decided to use TikTok. He promised on Monday, April 8, that he won’t be seen dancing in the posts on this popular Chinese social media platform among young people, according to Reuters and The Guardian.

The German government’s newest official channel “expands the range of information for citizens who increasingly inform and discuss politics on TikTok,” explained Scholz’s spokesperson, Steffen Hebestreit, in a press release.

The account will offer “a behind-the-scenes look at everyday government life,” Hebestreit specified.

Known for his sober leadership style, the Chancellor himself joked about opening a TikTok account in a message posted on another social platform.

“I won’t dance. I promise,” Scholz wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Scholz’s first post on TikTok was sent from his new account, TeamBundeskanzler.

To a funny tune, his first TikTok video shows Scholz sitting at his desk.

Scholz becomes the latest Western leader to join the Chinese-owned social platform, despite concerns about network security and disinformation.

Joe Biden opened an account in February, during this year’s US presidential elections, in an attempt to reach younger voters.

However, Biden’s presence on TikTok did not prevent him from expressing his concern about the company that owns the platform during a conversation with the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, which took place in April.

In fact, a statement from the Berlin government mentions that Olaf Scholz’s presence on TikTok is specifically aimed at young people.

Hebestreit specified that it is “a coincidence” that the account is opened a few days before Scholz’s visit to China this weekend. He also said that the Chancellor’s representatives evaluated the platform before opening the account.
