Gerhard Karner stated in a press conference with Minister Cătălin Predoiu that his position on the Schengen system has been clear for the past 10 days. He believes that the entire Schengen system is not functioning properly, which is why they are not in favor of opening it up. Border controls are currently in place between Germany and Austria, as well as between Austria and Slovenia. Germany has even discussed implementing border controls with Poland. These indicators show that the system as a whole is not working, therefore an expansion at this time is not opportune.
On the other hand, Romanian Interior Minister argues that Austria does not have a problem with Romania specifically, emphasizing that Romanian police officers are doing their job effectively.
“I wanted to make sure if there are any reproaches or weaknesses regarding how Romania protects its borders. I was glad to see that Austria also recognizes these improvements. We have done our homework and will continue to focus on border protection and bilateral cooperation. Austria does not have a problem with Romania. Our police officers are doing their job. We are ready to continue this work together. We will also support Austria, the Commission, and the member states in the reform of the European migration and asylum system,” stated Cătălin Predoiu.
